Well, why not. After all, there are plenty of \u201amodern\u2018 diagnostic chess tests on the internet nowadays that aim to determine your chess skill, or even your rating, based on a single video example. It's entertaining, short, no reading required, and basically, if you don't feel like it,... not even thinking \ud83d\ude42. In this article, however, we will look at some of these \u201atests\u2018 a little more closely and critically...<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Daria's Chess School<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>First of all, even a fun test should be correct in the sense that it contains no analytical errors. Recently, I came across a video test by a young Russian coach. So, dear readers, let's use it to determine your rating (which it is supposed to guarantee according to its intention). For accuracy, I add that the author states in the video that it is a rating <em>lichess<\/em>, presumably somewhat inflated, as is often the case on various platforms, including the gigantic <em>Chess.com<\/em>, .<\/p>\n<p>For those who do not sufficiently understand Russian, I recommend turning on YouTube's translator (subtitles) at the start of the video; nevertheless, I will briefly outline what to expect: After a moment, we will see a position, then the stopwatch will start. Within 30 seconds, we are supposed to orient ourselves in the position and calculate as much as possible. So \u2013 sit comfortably, turn off your mobile phones for a while, and possibly \u201aisolate your screaming offspring\u2018 \ud83d\ude42. Let's go!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to find out your level of play in chess? | 5\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KERjT_ZBt9Q?start=1&feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>How did you do, dear readers? If 30 seconds <em>to process the position<\/em> seemed too little, you share the same opinion. Personally, I would set the stopwatch to a minute or even two (we are in time trouble anyway). But what is a more serious fault? <strong>The given solution is not correct<\/strong>! (I doubt the author did this for didactic reasons, which would have been a very questionable approach anyway.)<\/p>\n<p>I have known this position for a very long time and \u2013 of course, long before the \u201adiscovery\u2018 of computers \u2013 I have <em>struggled enough with it<\/em>. I spent hours analysing it in detail because even in old literature the solution was not given correctly. Many authors clearly succumbed to the genuine beauty of the combination. So now let's slowly and thoroughly analyse with the help of the viewer how the position actually stands...<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"game-iframe\" style=\"border: 0; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Gargulak-Kahan.html\" width=\"100%\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The summary is therefore<\/strong>: the initial position is approximately in dynamic equilibrium, and the primary goal of the combination is \u2013 theoretically \u2013 to achieve this! So if this test were taken by \u201ahuman computers\u2018 like Fabiano Caruana or Dommaraju Gukesh, instead of rightly breaking through <em>Daria's scale<\/em> 2600+ they would fail \ud83d\ude42!<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Ghosts of calculation<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>With the following truly timeless calculation test, on the other hand, I have spent entire decades, having recently encountered something similar only on the pages of Chess Vibes by my favourite Nelson Lopez (mainly thanks to the beautiful quizzes and old studies he presents to viewers on video). I have assigned it to my pupils so many times that I can no longer count. Both individually and in groups.<\/p>\n<p>Not so much the test results, but the repeatedly recurring error, reaching up to about 80% of cases, prompted me to name this phenomenon. I began to call these kinds of mistakes <em>ghosts of calculation variations<\/em>. I will not reveal more at this moment \u2013 you might meet, name and identify the ghost too soon, which would spoil the entire test!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/duse3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1568\" src=\"https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/duse3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Let us now turn to the position and task, while everything else you will find out in the solution below. In the following video, the author is not making it up when she states at the beginning that the test was also given to promising child talents of the former USSR as one of the tests of their combinational abilities and \u2013 I add \u2013 sense for the maximum impact of pieces. However, I do not know whether both world champions Karpov (*1951) and Kasparov (*1963) or Kramnik (*1975), who are separated by a whole generation in extreme cases, passed it alike. It is possible, though.<\/p>\n<p>Before we watch the video with the chess-not-chess theme, I would like to\u2026heterosexually oriented men <em>warn<\/em>. The following test and also training aid was recommended in one of his books by one of the best Czech chess journalists, Grandmaster Lud\u011bk Pachman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hra-s-pesci-zugzwang.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1584\" src=\"https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hra-s-pesci-zugzwang-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hra-s-pesci-zugzwang-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hra-s-pesci-zugzwang-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Hra-s-pesci-zugzwang.jpg 728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pawns move and capture each other just like in chess (so en passant capture also exists, by the way). The goal of the game (and the end of the game) is that the winning side advances its pawn to the last rank or captures (like in draughts) all the opponent\u2019s pieces. Besides success in the game (most often we test the game and the ability of two players to learn quickly), less experienced opponents also learn to recognise the importance of restricting the mobility of the opponent\u2019s pawns. If I remember correctly, Lud\u011bk Pachman quite strongly recommends in his book that unsuccessful players try to replay the position again and again until\u2026 they start winning, or the match result with alternating colours ends in a draw. Well, the book was written and published (first in Germany) in times before the economic upheaval, so the author could not have known that within a few decades a generation of children would be born who run away from any problem at the first failure\u2026<\/p>\n<p>By the way, it has paid off for me,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to let very young children first play only on half the board, that is two pawns against two.<\/li>\n<li>to build on these practical lessons later with pawn endgames \u00e0 la Capablanca. That is examples in which one pawn on the wing controls two or even three of the opponent\u2019s; then one can move on to Nimzowitsch\u2019s postulate \u201astart as a candidate\u2018 and similar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A logical, but not entirely simple task for adult chess players then lies in <strong>determining which side wins the \u201agame\u2018 with the most accurate play<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Are IQ tests among the diagnostic tools for chess talent?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I claim that definitely yes! There are quite a few experts who like to stick to the definition that IQ tests are nothing more than... the ability to more or less successfully solve these tests \ud83d\ude42, but how else is it possible that Fischer, Kasparov, Carlsen, Judit Polg\u00e1r and many others belonged\/belong to the people with the highest ratings in the world?<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, I would dare to advise coaches to take a very sensitive approach and handling. If you present tests to children or youth today, make sure in advance how their legal guardians will react to your attempt! Well, and if you are used to scoring and rewarding your charges in group training, I recommend fundamentally not including IQ tests in this.<\/p>\n<p>The recognised highest quality group of IQ tests are those in which the examinees do not need any special knowledge from any area to solve them successfully \u2013 for example, social life or mathematics. They do not even have to be able to read and write! The so-called Raven's Progressive Matrices reveal in chess players <em>everything and always<\/em>, even in small children; even whether they can concentrate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IQ-test-4-tezky.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1586\" src=\"https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IQ-test-4-tezky-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IQ-test-4-tezky-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IQ-test-4-tezky-768x472.jpg 768w, https:\/\/skolasachu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/IQ-test-4-tezky.jpg 973w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Which pattern out of 8 possible do you place in the missing spot?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Many years ago I discovered a test on the internet which I later also consulted with psychologists. So not only I found it quite good under internet conditions, including evaluation and the possibility to set the solver's age. Not only a trained mathematician will recognise that it is probably a test containing only the so-called Raven's Progressive Matrices (the connection with chess skills is obvious to me). I assigned it to many of my charges. But over the whole time, only two were found who, at around 15 years old, solved all 30 questions of the test without a single mistake! And although they did not become chess professionals, one has been an international master for many years, the other, unfortunately even at that time \u201asufficiently\u2018 lazy, at least a FIDE master...<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The test, which can still be found on the pages <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/iq-test.stylove.com\/\"><em>https:\/\/iq-test.stylove.com\/<\/em><\/a><em> I recommend to all readers regardless of age. It is of course free and at the end you will even find explanations of the correct solutions, i.e. where and why you possibly made mistakes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well, that is all for now!
